Patella Earrings in Curly Maple

$65.00

Patella (kneecap) earrings in curly maple with hypoallergenic sterling silver hooks

In the fall of 2023 I injured my knee while running so badly that I had to walk with a cane for several months. My physiotherapist is a miracle worker and got me mobile again in time for a big hiking trip, but I maintain an interest and fascination in knee joint anatomy.

Curly maple is not a species of maple, but a wavy grain pattern which is often found at the junction of branches (although it does have a genetic link). When sawn and finished in the right way, this figuring causes chatoyancy (or cat’s eye effect), an optical phenomenon where a luminous band of light appears to glide across the surface, often seen in gemstones. Each patella earing has multiple chatoyancy lines throughout, giving them a shimmering effect.

Note on variation:

These pieces are hand-carved from rough cut locally sourced lumber. You can expect small variations in colouring, grain pattern, and shape from the depicted image.
