Moose Vertebra Wine Stopper
Stainless steel wine stopper with rubber seal, topped with miniature moose vertebra hand-carved from spalted maple
MADE TO ORDER ITEM
While I do my best to keep a few of these in stock and ready to go, your item will likely be made-to-order. Please anticipate 3-5 days from order date to shipping time.
Last summer my friend and I took an impromptu roadtrip through Newfoundland, cutting through the centre of the province on 100km of unserviced dirt road. Thrice named (Abitibi-Price Road aka the Red Indian Lake Road, aka the Star Lake Road), the road mainly serves as access for a couple mining and logging operations, but for the intrepid traveler also connects Millertown to Burgeo, cutting out about 2-3 hours of highway and saving us a whole tank of gas.
On the way back we stopped to use nature’s rest facilities, and I walked right into a hunter’s dumping grounds - we counted bones from at least 3 moose! I modeled this piece after one of those vertebrae, that now sits as part of a small bone garden on our porch.
I work primarily with rescued and salvaged wood - this spalted maple is from several trees cut down by the city some time ago. The patterning of spalted maple - swirling cream colors and sharp white and black lines - is caused by fungal decay during the trees lifespan, which is halted and stabilized by the drying process.
Note on variation:
These pieces are hand-carved from rough cut locally sourced lumber. You can expect small variations in colouring, grain pattern, and shape from the depicted image.
